Hollister Ranch

Nestled on the flank of the rolling grassy coastal plain in Hollister Ranch, near Gaviota, CA, this modest home serves as a weekend getaway for a busy couple, their adult children and friends.  Panoramic views of the ocean, islands, coastal plain, foothills and mountains are absolutely breath-taking.

Restrained plantings take their cue from the glorious setting.  Sweeps of native grasses and succulents tie the house to the land.  Olive trees provide shade.  Dramatic succulents in pots provide a counterpoint to the simple backdrop.

A cedar hot tub is tucked into the hillside and surrounded by fieldstone walls and fish-scale flagstone. A small flash-heater provides a warm water shower under an olive next to the tub for de-sanding before plunging in for a post-surf warm-up.  Meandering gravel paths connect the garden spaces.  Lyrical fieldstone “tole work” on the floor plane brings movement to the garden and ties the long narrow landscape together.  A campfire circle (fueled by propane) and lantern light invite outdoor evening lounging.  Driftwood details – surf rack, stools around the fire pit, posts for hanging lanterns – complete this idyllic surf camp.  Cowabunga, dude!
